Mitsubishi plans to bring a plug-in hybrid SUV to the North American market in the next couple of years.

Yes, you read that right. It's an electric SUV.

In a recent interview with Automotive News, company president Osamu Masuko unveiled plans to introduce a Montero model with three power train options including gas, plug-in hybrid and diesel. If you happen to read our blog, you may remember reading about the possible revival of the Montero back in October.

It's really the best of both worlds as far as we're concerned. The Montero would be an environmentally conscious vehicle, but still tough and rugged enough to handle those harsh, unrelenting Colorado winters.

Masuko's announcement simply reaffirms Mitsubishi's commitment to creating new car and SUV models that are a both environmentally sustainable and economical for the modern driver. It also shows Mitsubishi's commitment to re-establishing its foothold in the U.S. market and expanding on their incredible line of vehicles.

Not surprisingly, Mitsubishi recently declared its goal of making PHEVs (Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) 20 percent of its global product offering. A PHEV version of the popular Montero only makes perfect sense to us and should help Mitsubishi achieve their lofty goal.

In fact, we can't wait to get our hands on one of these babies.

Unfortunately, the futuristic PHEV Montero won't be ready to hit the market until 2015-16 at the earliest.

For now, Skyline Mitsubishi is proud to offer a wide collection of new Mitsubishi cars and SUVs. Please visit our award-winning Thornton, CO dealership to test drive the vehicle of your choice today!
