That timing is managed by your timing belt or chain. The timing belt in your car, truck, or SUV is what rotates the crankshaft and the camshaft with a series of gears so that the valves on your engine open and close at just the right time. This has to happen with that precision timing in order to ensure that the valve openings and closings coincide with all of the cylinder's intake and exhaust strokes. If the timing gets out of sync, then the whole process will not function properly.
