Over the course of the past few years, Mitsubishi has put a serious focus on developing electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. These alternative vehicles could very well be the future of the auto industry and Mitsubishi is going big. The question everybody in the industry is asking is what will happen to models like the performance-focused Lancer Evolution. This street-legal rally car has been delighting performance enthusiasts for years but with the company shifting focus to more fuel efficient models, many are worried the Lancer Evolution could get left behind.
There are some rumors currently swirling around about the possibility of letting the Lancer drop from the current lineup and leaving the Evo as a standalone model.
updates to the Lancer Evo could include downsizing the engine to something similar to the 1.1-liter three-cylinder turbo that debuted in the XR-PHEV Concept at this year's Tokyo Motor Show. That small powerplant could be combined with a series of electric motors, lightweight batteries and other green technology to make the power outputs comparable to those of the current model while increasing the overall efficiency resulting in a model similar to the new BMW i8.
