Revealed at the Geneva Motor Show, the Outlander Plug-In Hybrid not only marks a step forward for the Mitsubishi Outlander model, it signifies a leap in the direction of a greener, more global brand reputation for Mitsubishi.

As the first new Mitsubishi model to contain the automaker's EV-based plug-in hybrid (P-HEV) system, the Outlander is sure to stir up a great deal of chatter amongst green technology enthusiasts. For one, the system essentially operates on electricity but it supplemented by a gasoline engine when needed. This allows drivers to choose between the following three driving modes:

-          Pure: calls on Twin Motor 4WD EV system
-          Series: utilizes Twin Motor 4WD EV supported by internal combustion engine
-          Parallel: employs Twin Motor 4WD EV supported by a FWD-powered internal combustion engine

In short, the Outlander opens up plenty of satisfying options for drivers with different EV preferences. Also, in case you didn't catch on, the next-gen model will be the first permanent 4WD electric car in series production. Powertrain options include a 2.0L gas engine as well as a DiD Clean Diesel, both of which serve up 147-hp.

If you recall at the beginning, Skyline Mitsubishi did mention that the Outlander symbolizes a step towards development of a more global brand. This is largely because the revamped crossover wears a brand new design language which Mitsubishi says is still in the works. Of course, this Outlander is only the first of many next-generation Mitsubishi models to come.
