In the dynamic realm of technology there seems to be a theme - wires are becoming rapidly obsolete. Think about it. Phones once connected by curly cords are now an ancient artifacts and laptops or, dare we say it, desktops once hooked to the web by Ethernet cables now hit up wifi wherever they go. And just recently, thanks to Mitsubishi, EV models are on the short road to wireless as well. The anticipated Mitsubishi i will be the first mass produced, all electric, rechargeable car that you can power up without plugging in.
How is such a feat possible? Mitsubishi has collaborated with WiTricity and IHI Corporations in order to construct these wireless charging systems. Their ultimate goal will be taking electric vehicles where so many products of modern tech-genius have gone, rendering plug-in power archaic.
"WiTricity and IHI are two major players in the wireless charging and electric infrastructure, and it is hoped they can make it easier for drivers, governments and companies to roll out systems to charge cars without plugging in," according to Totally Motor.1
Vehicles charged sans wire may sound a bit of a stretch to some but the building blocks have already been put conveniently in place. WiTricity recently devised a system for the public that uses a patented magnetic resonance system, which can safely deliver 3.3kW of charging power over a distance of about 2 - 3 inches. Of course, any potential legal issues will have to be cleared before the technology hits the mass market. Mitsubishi and its partners, however, are thinking ahead and already have developed a comprehensive plan of research, development and real-world testing cut out.
