What's black, protects the base of your new Mitsubishi model and is made from plants? Upon reading the first two descriptions Skyline Mitsubishi is guessing you thought of floor mats but then read the last one and reconsidered. Well, you shouldn't second guess yourself because the answer "floor mats" is entirely true. As part of an effort to green up vehicles from bottom to top, Mitsubishi has developed a mat made from plant-based fibers.

Specifically, the super green mat is crafted from plant-based bio-polyethylene fibers. In easier terms, the fibers are made using sugarcane molasses. In order to safeguard the material against even the roughest wear and tear, Mitsubishi engineers have wrapped the fibers in petroleum-based polypropylene sheaths.

Company officials have stated that the eco-friendly floorcoverings will be moved into production come this summer. However, they are only one piece of the green puzzle. In order to really make a difference in environmental protection, Mitsubishi is working on an entire slew of plant-based materials referred to as "Green Plastics." At this point, Skyline Mitsubishi can't tell which Mitsubishi parts will receive the green treatment. But judging by the speed at which the motivated automaker is working, we're guessing more developments will occur over the next few months.
